MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University softball team added two players in the early signing period last week.

Lake Region High right-hander and Polkpreps.com Pitcher of the Year Haley Wiseman signed a National Letter of Intent and college softball scholarship with Barry University at Lake Region.

“Haley is an outstanding pitcher, one of the best in the state,” Barry head coach Danielle Penner said. “She’s also a great student and person and we’re very excited to have her join the team.”

Wiseman was astounding from the circle, posting a 16-5 record last season with rock-bottom 0.91 ERA, fanning 215 hitters through 138 innings. She also sports a 4.4 GPA – fourth in her class – and is planning to study nursing.

“Once I met the coach and visited the school I knew it was very good. They have five-year accelerated (physician assistant) program,” Wiseman said. “Since I was eight, I wanted to play college softball.”

Outfielder Alayna Gallagher continued the pipeline from Palm Harbor University High. A two-time honorable mention All-Pinellas County selection, she led the Lady Canes to back-to-back Pinellas County Athletic Conference titles in 2012 and 2013 as a starting outfielder. Former Buccaneer Sarah Broeseker and current Bucs Taylor Sabol and Megan Copeland also matriculated at PHUHS.

Gallagher also starred for the Mizuno Krusherz, batting leadoff with a .450 average and .511 on-base percentage.

“Alyana is a hard working outfielder with a lot of potential,” Penner said.  “She is a strong, quick and intelligent student-athlete with the ability to provide an immediate impact early in her career.”

The Bucs graduate just three players off the 2014 roster. They went 34-20 in 2013 and reached the finals of the South Region II Tournament.

“Haley and Alayna exemplify the type of student and athlete we strive to recruit each year at Barry University,” Penner said. “They are hard-workers, great teammates and excel on the field and in the classroom.  They are quality additions to both Barry University and the softball program.”
