Men's Golf 2nd After 2 Rounds of Super Regional

POOLER, Ga. -- Barry University's No. 1-ranked men's golf team is in second place after two rounds of the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional.

The Buccaneers shot 291 in Tuesday's second round, and are two strokes behind leader Nova Southeastern, whose 582 36-hole total leads the 20-team, 108-player field. Florida Tech, first round leader South Carolina-Aiken and Lynn are tied for third, a stroke behind the Bucs at 585. Host Armstrong Atlantic is sixth at 589, North Alabama seventh at 590 and Clayton State and West Florida tied for ninth at 597. Florida Southern and Erskine College are tied for 11th at 598.

The top seven teams and top two individuals not on qualifying teams will earn the right to compete in the NCAA Division II Championships May 19-23 in Allendale, Michigan.

Barry's Adam Svensson shot a 2-under 70 for the second straight day on the 7,016-yard Savannah Quarters Country Club course. He is tied for third with Flagler's Spencer Schindler at 4-under 140. Florida Southern's Tim Crouch and Nova's Santiago Gomez share a one-stroke lead at 5-under 139. Saint Leo's Ryan Gendron is fifth at 3-under. 

Barry's first round leader Scott Smyers is tied for 12th at 1-over 145, following a 79 in the second round. He shot a career and tournament-low 66 in the first round. Bucs teammate Mario Beltran shot par Tuesday, and is tied for 41st at 151. Jared Dalga shot 75, and is tied for 54th with nine other players at 153. Berry Jole sits in a nine-way tie for 64th at 154 after shooting 2-over 74 in the second round.

Svensson, the No. 1-ranked player in the country, had four birdies Tuesday to raise his tournament total to eight. He had back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 and 5. Beltran had four birdies to bring his total to seven. Dalga had three birdies, giving him four in the tournament. Smyers and Jole each birdied one hole in the second round. Smyers has five birdies and an eagle. Jole has three birdies.  

Play concludes with Wednesday's final round.
