Women's Tennis: Abanda, Goia on to Varner Semis

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Barry University women’s tennis players Karina Goia and Elisabeth Abanda both advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A singles draw at the Varner Invitational Friday at Rollins College.

Abanda defeated Flagler’s Thaisa Pereira, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round. She advanced to the semifinals when Rollins’ Shannon Etten defaulted in the quarterfinals.

Goia, who received an opening-round bye, beat Rollins’ Johanna Olsson, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

In the Flight B bracket, Barry’s Kimmy Twelker beat Rollins’ Katie Wookey, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Barry’s Blanka Szavay lost to Lynn’s Martina Gledacheva, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarters. Both of the Buccaneers received first-round byes.

In doubles play, Szavay and Goia were 8-2 winners over Rollins’ Fabiana Vitanza and Zoe Monque in the Flight A bracket. Twelker and Abanda beat Saint Leo’s Anastasia Wagner and Maria Benkirane, 8-1, in their first match in the A doubles bracket.

Barry’s Jasi Witherspoon received a first-round bye in the D singles bracket.
