On Thursday, March 26, Barry University’s Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) hosted its 2nd Annual Community Engagement Awards to honor Barry students, faculty, staff, and community partners for their community service participation and achievements. The awards were part of the CCSI’s larger Community Engagement Symposium.
Award winners were nominated by members of the Barry community and were chosen by the Community Engagement Awards Committee, which consists of various Barry faculty, staff, and students.
Hosted for only the second year, the Community Engagement Symposium provides a venue for presentations and discussions of community engagement projects, practices, and perspectives. The symposium supports the implementation of Barry’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), which is designed to foster personal and social responsibility through experiential learning.
The Community Engagement Symposium was headlined by Barbara Jacoby, faculty associate for leadership and community service-learning at the University of Maryland, College Park. Jacoby’s focus at the University of Maryland is to facilitate faculty development and support for service-learning and a range of initiatives involving academic partnerships and civic engagement. A well-known scholar and author, she received the Maryland Campus Compact Scholarship Award in 2010 and previously served as National Campus Compact’s Engaged Scholar for Professional Development.
Jacoby’s keynote lecture, “Making Sense of the Language of Community Engagement,” explored the field’s terminology to deepen understanding of the complexities of high-quality community engagement. In addition to her lecture, Jacoby also spoke during the award ceremony, stressing the significance of the work Barry’s CCSI does and the importance of celebrating community engagement achievements and rewarding faculty through promotion.
