The Violence Against Women Act: Overcoming Barriers for Immigrant Victims of Abuse

Adrian Dominican School of Education Grants and Outreach Director, Silvia Reyes and PhD Counseling student, Patricia Timerman presented: The Violence Against Women Act: Overcoming Barriers for Immigrant Victims of Abuse, during the Fourth Annual College Brides Walk (Domestic/Dating  Violence Awareness) at Barry University on February 14, 2014.

Audience of over 100 people included advocates, high school students, University faculty and students, counselors, and personnel from social service and community agencies.

The goal of the workshop was to create awareness and understanding of the domestic violence dynamics and how these affect immigrant victims; as well as arming its audience with the knowledge on how to help immigrant victims overcome systemic barriers and find ways to navigate the systems that are not often responsive to immigrant victims' needs.
