Dr. Joanna Marasco joined the Adrian Dominican School of Education as an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Reading Program in Fall 2004. She is an editor and chapter author of the Teaching and Advocacy and coauthor of several book chapters and journal articles on issues relating to gender and critical literacy in broad social contexts. She had eight years of teaching at the university level and five years in public schools.

Dr. Marasco received her doctorate at the University of Arizona in 1999, where Dr. Kenneth Goodman and Dr. Denny Taylor were her mentors and thesis advisors. Her dissertation research was a six year ethnographic study of the literacy documents of a teenage mother. She was awarded at the Dean’s Forum with an Outstanding Research Honor.

Dr. Marasco has had numerous professional presentations at national conferences in the areas of literacy and social justice and has often served as conference and symposium organizer. In addition, she has had long time affiliations with professional organizations. Dr. Marasco’s professional service at California State University has included work on teacher credentialing and education curriculum. In Missouri, her professional service included the task force on teacher excellence and college retention and admission. Recently, Dr. Marasco has recently participated in the first Conference on Teachers in Areas of Armed Conflict, International Scholars Forum, Hofstra University.
