Graduate Administrative Assistantships in the Department of Communication
The Department of Communication awards a limited number of Graduate Assistantships to students pursuing the Master of Arts degree in Communication. Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis. The Communication Department Graduate Committee will review recipients’ standing each semester as a condition of renewal.
While studying to meet academic requirements for their advanced degree, Graduate Assistants complement their formal studies through administrative work under the supervision of faculty or staff. A Graduate Administrative Assistant assists faculty and/or staff by working on various department projects. Such projects can include work on a variety of special assignments and helping department faculty with ongoing research efforts.
Students admitted to a degree-awarding graduate program are eligible for Administrative Assistantships through the Department of Communication. Preference will be given to Communication graduate students. To be considered for an Assistantship, a student must
- Have a 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA or equivalent academic achievement
- Have computer or media-related skills in line with projected duties
- Have strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Additionally, to maintain their Assistantships students must
- Be in good standing with the university
- Maintain a cumulative graduate GPA of at least 3.00
Administrative Assistantships in the Department of Communication are based on awards of tuition grants (FTEs) and/or stipends (salary). The two types of awards can be combined. The total amount and type of grant awarded to a student will depend on several criteria, including a student’s qualifications and academic background, the number of ongoing projects in the department requiring assistants, and the number of students applying for Assistantships.
Graduate Assistantships are awarded on a per-semester basis. Graduate Assistants must request that their award be continued to retain funding. Such requests will be evaluated based on the student’s continued meeting of eligibility requirements, quality of work, and ongoing department needs.
