Thesis/Capstone Project

The Master of Arts in Communication requires you to complete either a Thesis or Capstone Project.

Thesis

For individuals who are interested in pursuing their Ph.D., completing the Thesis would be very beneficial. Heavily based on exploration and research, the Thesis will allow you to explore a subject of interest within your field of study, and utilize much of what was learned within the theoretical side of their studies.

Capstone Project

Beneficial for those individuals interested in developing a compelling portfolio piece so they can go straight into the industry after graduation. The Capstone Project puts the hands-on aspect of the programs to the test. You will develop your own portfolio with guidance from a professor. The following represent three broad categories your project may fit into:

  1. Campaign: You are to select a client in the South Florida community (off campus) who has an issue or project for which you can design a campaign. (See Real Client Work )
  2. Corporate Communication Analysis: Several kinds of projects could be pursued to complete the capstone option in the area of Corporate Communication.  The distinguishing feature of a capstone as opposed to a thesis is that the capstone is an applied project that involves partnering with an organization to study a concrete organizational problem or process.  Some project examples, are: Process consultations in which you review practices at an organization and suggest ways to modify them based on specific goals; Case studies of critical events examined for the purpose of critically evaluating their cause and the organizational response; Ethnographies of the workplace; Fully integrated comprehensive communication plans (research, implementation plan, outcomes communication goals), representative of industry best practices, trends, and tools
  3. Multimedia Project: Craft a philanthropic multimedia project that examines an issue relevant to the community. Your project must demonstrate an understanding of layered, multimedia approach to storytelling.
  4. Integrated Capstone Experience: Your capstone may benefit from incorporating an Internship Experience into one of the above projects.
