Department of Communication

Welcome to the Department of Communication website and thank you for your interest in our programs.

Offering multiple majors and home to all of Barry’s student media, Communication is a popular department and a hub of student activity on campus. Because it is closely linked to the technological, social, and cultural changes rapidly changing our world, communication is a versatile major at Barry University that provides students various ways to pursue their interests and career goals.

Our programs reflect the breadth of the communication discipline with majors in Advertising, Communication & Media Studies, Public Relations, and Broadcast & Emerging Media. We also offer minors in each of these areas and an interdisciplinary minor in journalism that combines classes in graphic design, photography, English writing, and communication.

These multiple majors and minors allow you to design your studies in ways that most suit your interests and career goals. For example, you can easily integrate a major in Broadcast & Emerging Media with the Journalism minor to broaden your skills and make you more competitive.

You can also gain additional practical experience by working with student media in the department. We are home to the campus newspaper (The Buccaneer), the campus radio station (The Mix, 99.5 FM), and the campus cable channel (Btv). All student media at Barry live up to their name by being student managed, and students create all content and programming for each medium. Financial aid is available for working with campus media.

Your studies will also be supported by are state-of-the-art facilities. The David Brinkley television studio, WBUJ radio studio, and the premier digital media lab have all been extensively upgraded to give students ample access to quality equipment and facilities. In the Media Center, students can edit their work in multiple dedicated editing suites and can reserve an extensive range of media production equipment, such as cameras, tripods, and other items.

Finally, we also offer a thriving internship program that lets you make the most of your studies in the cosmopolitan environment of Miami/South Florida. Students regularly find internships in professional sports, media, and advertising/PR agencies, among other companies. Recent internships include, Zimmerman Advertising, WPLG ABC 10, WLTV UNIVISON 23, Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins, Florida Panthers, Miami Film Festival, and Ocean Drive Magazine.

The Department of Communication offers a great combination of state-of-the-art facilities, an international and professionally active faculty, and up-to-date programs, as well as a supportive environment where we are all focused on helping you fulfill your goals.

I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our programs and the opportunities the department offers you.
