Communication Studies
The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies is designed for students who seek a generalist’s orientation to mass media. You will be encouraged to investigate all aspects of communication theory in order to develop a core of knowledge in communication studies.
Communication studies focuses on how people arrive at shared meanings via the interchange of messages. In other words, you will learn to effectively communicate in many different situations ranging from small interpersonal, business, family and cultural groups, or in any situation you may find yourself.
As a result, you will be equipped with the tools and knowledge to enter a variety of professions such as advertising, online media, radio, television, public relations, theater and the performing arts, government and politics, business, law, and social services.
Opportunities in South Florida
As an international media and business center, the Miami-South Florida region offers a myriad of internship opportunities for communication studies students. Several of our students have also worked in Washington, D.C., and our bilingual students have the opportunity to pursue internships at Spanish-language networks Telemundo and Univision, in addition to the advertising/public relations firms requiring communication in two languages.
Developing Highly Effective Communicators
Our courses draw on both the classical tradition as well as the contemporary behavioral sciences. The study itself originated from the older disciplines of rhetoric and public oration. But today, students in the program focus on messaging - whether oral or written - in the context of face-to-face communication.
The curriculum produces communicators who are highly effective at critically analyzing all forms of communication, thereby preparing them for life as enlightened citizens and professionals in a variety of career paths.
