SCUBA Society
The SCUBA Society was established to assist the Barry community in providing safe, enjoyable opportunities to interact with the aquatic environment. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to join as the Sport Management - Diving Industry student majors and Dive Education minors lead a variety of educational experiences.
As a student organization in good standing, campus and community volunteer activities are required. Each fall the SCUBA Society participates in the campus-sponsored Halloween Haunted House that provides a scary and safe environment for local children. Always using an underwater theme, the SCUBA Society has won a number of awards for their innovative presentations.
Other community-based volunteer opportunities range from local beach clean-ups; performing reef fish count surveys; working with Habitat for Humanity building homes; Thanksgiving food baskets for local families; and participation in walk-a-thons for various organizations.
Travel opportunities are also available as members experience dive/snorkel outings in Miami , Fort Lauderdale and the Keys. Visiting Crystal River to snorkel with endangered manatees is one of the favored trips over October's Fall Holiday. Easter Break often finds us in the north Florida springs as we canoe dive in Rainbow River and explore the Florida aquifer at Devil's Den and other locales. |
