Terry Piper, Ph.D.

After more than three decades working in higher education in Canada, Terry Piper returned to the US as Dean of ADSOE in August, 2006. After earning her BA and MA in English from the University of New Hampshire and teaching high school in the same state, Dr. Piper moved to Canada to pursue her doctorate in linguistics. She held positions in several Canadian universities including the University of British Columbia, Saint Mary’s University, Memorial University, and York University. She has been a Dean of three schools of education and served as Vice-President Academic and, later, President and CEO of the BC Open University.
Her academic area is first and second language learning. Dr. Piper has written eight books including the recently published fourth edition of Language and Learning: The Home and School Years (Prentice-Hall, 2006) and a novel, Ozark Girl, due out in early 2007 (Cambridge Books). When she has some spare time, she will happily report on what she does with it.
John G. “Jack” Dezek,
Ed.D.
Associate Dean for Graduate Professional Studies

Dr. Dezek is associate dean for graduate programs in education and associate professor of educational leadership at Barry. He earned the bachelor’s degree in English/Education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the master’s, ed. specialist and doctor of education degrees in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. Before coming to Barry, Dr. Dezek was the dean of graduate studies at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan; while in Michigan he served as a member and was elected co-chair of the Michigan Council of Graduate Deans.
Dr. Dezek previously taught high school English and journalism courses in Baltimore County, Maryland, and in Allegan County, Michigan; in Michigan he also served as director of public relations of a K-12 school district and, later, for Aquinas College. He has edited several publications and newsletters including the Aquinas Magazine. Jack has made presentations at conferences and workshops on marketing, educational public relations, and school-community collaborations. He teaches graduate courses in school/community relations and communications. He has been a member of the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professions (NAGAP) and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and has done community service work with local chambers of commerce as well as United Way and AIDS agencies.
Catheryn J. Weitman, Ph.D.
Associate Dean, Graduate Education and Research

Dr. Weitman is the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research and full professor. During her tenure at Barry University and with the Adrian Dominican School of Education, she held varied leadership positions, including serving as the Chair of the University's Grade Appeal process; as the Department of Education Liaison for the School of Arts and Sciences, Adrian Dominican School of Education, and the School of Human Performances and Leisure Sciences; and led national accreditation process for elementary education programs for over 10 years. She was honored in 2002 as the recipient of the annual "Friend of School Psychology" award through the School of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Weitman earned her degrees from Stephens College (AA degree), the University of Missouri (BS, in Education), the University of Guam (M.Ed), and Texas A & M University (Ph.D. in Educational Administration, personnel, and curriculum and instruction). Before coming to Barry University , she was the dean of the School of Education at Glenville State College, Glenville , West Virginia .
Dr. Weitman has made numerous presentations at the international, national, regional, and state levels. She is often called upon to discuss assessment and performance -based practices. Dr. Weitman is a reviewer for Dimensions of Early Childhood published by the Southern Early Childhood Association and she is a member of the Florida Department of Education Program Approval Standards Revision Task Force. She sits on the ACEI/NCATE Audit Committee which is an oversight of the NCATE accreditation process for elementary teacher education programs.
Paul J. L. Papier, Ed.D.
Associate Dean for Undergraduate Teacher Education

Dr. Papier is associate dean for undergraduate teacher education and assistant professor at Barry. He earned the bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Florida State University , a master's degree in education from the University of Miami , and an educational specialist and doctor of education degrees from the Argosy University/Sarasota.
Dr. Papier taught grades one through six for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. He was a principal at three public elementary schools, M. A. Milam, Ben Sheppard and Palmetto Elementary. At Barry University , Dr. Papier has had leadership roles as a coordinator, director of student teaching and executive director for the Department of Teaching and Learning. He has presented at state conferences and a board member of the Florida Association of Teacher Educators (FATE). Dr. Papier has been past president of the University of Miami's School of Education Alumni Association.
Maria Stallions, Ph.D.

Dr. Maria E. Stallions is the assistant dean for off-campus operation and outreach and assistant professor of education . She earned her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, master's degree in Elementary and Montessori Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership and Education with a specialization in Exceptional Student Education from Barry University . Before coming to Barry University , Dr. Stallions, was the Math and Science curriculum chair at the Miami Shores/Barry University Charter School and grade level chair for Holmes Elementary in Miami Dade-County Public Schools. Dr. Stallions, is the recipient of several professional awards, including the Florida Association of Teacher Educators (FATE) Mary L. Collins Excellence in Teacher Education Award. She has been awarded grants for professional development, service-learning, diversity, literacy, mentoring and assisted technology projects. Dr. Stallions has written various publications and presented at local, national and international conferences and serves on the editorial board of various journals. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Exceptional Student Education and assessment. Dr. Stallions is an active member of Kappa Delta Pi and is Barry University 's Nu Psi Chapter counselor. |
