Samuel S. Perkins, Ph.D.

Dr. Perkins is an Assistant Professor at Barry University, in the Teaching English as a Second Language Department in the Adrian Dominican School of Education. He earned his doctoral degree in Higher Education with a specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. His research interests include culture, language, literacy, assessment, and distance education. He is active in the education profession serving as Secretary to the Florida Association of Teacher Educators (FATE), Secretary to the 2006 TESOL Convention, a member of the Sunshine State TESOL Executive Board, and Co-Editor of the Sunshine State TESOL newsletter, The Messenger.

In 2004, Dawn Rodriguez, a graduating student in the Kendall Elementary Day 2 + 2 Program (of which I was Coordinator at the time) received the outstanding Elementary Education Student award at the Barry University Honors Convocation.

In 2004, I received an AppLE Award (Appreciation for Leading Educators), which is given by commuter students to Barry employees who make a difference in students’ lives.

In 2001, I developed Applied Linguistics as a dually listed undergraduate and graduate online course. I piloted this course (using the Web CT server) in fall, 2001 and modified the course to be housed on a Blackboard server. I have taught the course several times and received superior student evaluations each time.
