Dr. Perkins is an Associate Professor at Barry University. He earned his doctoral degree in Higher Education with a specialization in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Georgia State University.

Dr. Perkins is the Director of the Bachelor of Science (with Masters Option) Program.

His research interests include transformative education, culture, and language development.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

 

Barry University Administrative Experience

2009 -

Director of the Five Year Program

(This Program morphed into the Bachelor of Science Program with Master of Science Option.)

This seamless program is a unique program in which students may earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. There are three choices of undergraduate majors: Infancy to Early Childhood (Grade 3), Early to Middle Childhood (Kindergarten to Grade 6), and Special Education (Kindergarten to Grade 12).There are four choices of middle-school (grades 5 – 9) content-area minors: Social Sciences, Mathematics, English, and General Science. Also, students in this program earn both State of Florida ESOL and reading endorsements. This program is built upon the themes of social justice, professional development, socio/political community contexts, and critical thinking/ problem solving.

Beginning in 2007, I Co-Chaired the committee that developed the curriculum for this program in addition to collaborating on developing the initial Florida Department of Education (FDOE) folio for the Program. I have collaborated with administrators and faculty members of the College of Arts and Sciences to schedule program courses and for curriculum development and refinement.

2007 – 2009

Department Chair, Early and Middle Childhood Education

As Chair of the Early and Middle Childhood Education Department, I have led the undergraduate and graduate programs in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Montessori, and TESOL. This involves developing and/or supervising the development of semester course schedules and annual program and departmental budgets; supervising the program, curricular, (online and face-to-face) course, and syllabi development and refinement for the Department; monitoring student advisement; collaborating in student recruitment and marketing endeavors; supervising collection, analysis, and communication of data and information for accreditation and program reviews; securing, mentoring, and evaluating full-time and adjunct faculty; representing the Department at meetings and functions within and outside of the University; performing financial analyses of program sites for the purposes of closing or consolidating the sites; and collaborating with other Department Chairs (Exceptional Student Education, Reading, and Curriculum and Instruction) for the purposes of curriculum development and refinement and preparation for accreditation reviews.

2005 - 2010

TESOL Coordinator, Barry University

In this position mandated by the FDOE for state-approved programs. I have served as the liaison between the FDOE and the University in terms of receiving and communicating information related to TESOL; gathering, synthesizing, and reporting TESOL data and information for purposes including accreditation and program reviews; and monitoring the credentials of full-time and adjunct faculty teaching TESOL courses and courses in the ESOL-infused programs.

2005 – 2007

Director, TESOL Department, School of Education, Barry University

As Director of the TESOL Department, I developed the semester course schedules and annual budgets for the Department; supervised the development and refinement of curricula, (online and face-to-face) courses, and syllabi for the TESOL undergraduate and graduate courses; supervised student advisement; collaborated in student recruitment and departmental marketing; secured, mentored, and evaluated full-time and adjunct faculty members; and represented the Department within and outside of the University.

2002 – 2004

As Coordinator of the undergraduate Kendall Elementary Day Program, which at the time was the undergraduate program with the most students, I developed the semester course schedules and annual budget for the Program; supervised student advisement; participated in student recruitment and program marketing; secured and mentored full-time and adjunct faculty members; mentored students in completing their portfolios to document mastery of the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPs); and represented the Program within and outside of the University.
