On Jan. 21 the Wellness Initiative Network, Care Giver Group, and Library welcomed alumna, Dr. Julia Baldwin, author of “The Power of Resilience: How Women Survive Crisis.” Baldwin as she presented her book in Barry’s Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library in room 308. Baldwin’s first edition of her book sold out three days after release on Amazon.com with the exception of 50 copies she brought for signing between presentations. All proceeds from Friday’s sales went to the Andrew Brugal Baldwin Memorial Fund in honor of her son who died of kidney cancer at age 17.
Baldwin, a motivational speaker and business consultant, is the Senior Pastor at Sanctuary ministries. She serves the crisis team for regions X and XI of Florida’s Fire and Police Departments, and was previously CAO at trinity International University for six years. Baldwin is a distinguished lecturer who has appeared at various universities in South Florida, discussing up-to-the-minute topics in the fields of social science and resilience theory. She completed her Ph.D. in education with an emphasis in leadership and neuroscience at Barry University’s School of Education.
Baldwin faced a terrible tragedy when her teenage son died from kidney cancer. Through it all, she worked through the pain and stayed resilient for herself and her family. The message in her book is that the power of resilience has a responsibility to the ethical, professional, and personal development of every individual in their formation of perseverance in the midst of trials. Along with Baldwin’s personal story, her well referenced study draws on the wisdom of ten prominent women including Danna Shalala and Janet Reno thanks to the help of former Barry University President Sister Jeanne O’Laughlin.
“The Power of Resilience: How Women Survive Crisis” is about people and effect. It demonstrates the difference they can make in the ultimate success of their life, not simply because of their situation and commitment to success, but because of the impact that all of us can make in the lives of those we have the opportunity to associate with and serve.
