Practicum / Field Experience
All candidates in the program must complete an Internship. This Internship is a full-time, school-based experience with a skilled, certified elementary and ESOL endorsed teacher. Candidates must apply for Internship the semester prior to registering for the course. As part of the application process for Internship, candidates must have taken the FTCE examinations.
Candidates participating in the Internship must also meet for scheduled seminars, typically held on Saturdays.
The Year-Long Internship is an alternative option for students who are currently employed in schools as full-time teachers. In order to complete the Year-Long Internship, you must:
- hold a full-time teaching position in a public or private K-6 setting
- must have completed all requirements for Internship (including coursework and passing of state tests)
- identify a school site individual who has completed the State of Florida Clinical Educator Training Course to supervise you on a regular basis
- attend graduate seminars and meet all seminar requirements
- submit a completed Accomplished Practices Portfolio at the end of the first semester of the Year-Long Internship
A Barry University supervisor (i.e., a graduate faculty member in the program) will mentor you throughout the Internship through individual meetings, small group seminars, and on-site observations.
Application deadlines are:
- For the Fall Semester: Application for Internship due February 25
- For the Spring Semester: Application for Internship due September 20
