Why Barry University?

Quality. Our focus is on quality; not simply on the quality of your education, but on the quality of educators that we prepare through an emphasis on accountability and preparation. You will learn best teaching practices rather than focus on specific test-based skills, making you a more versatile teacher. Our students are well-prepared to enter the workplace and to be recognized for their accomplishments.

Community. At Barry, you will be known as an individual, not as a number. Barry will provide you with the resources and assistance that you need in order to reach your goals. Our professors pay attention to the progress of all students in order to monitor their development. We believe that a caring classroom environment will produce caring teachers. This is confirmed by the frequency of positive feedback that we receive from employers who have found Barry graduates to be very nurturing teachers.

Faculty. Education faculty work in area schools at least three days a year in order to stay current with the latest trends and developments. Many of our adjuncts are current practitioners in the field, and many are board-certified teachers.

Experience. Real-world experiences are built into the program. You will be provided with many opportunities for field experiences in your courses, including observing classroom settings, working with groups of students, participating in one-on-one sessions, and teaching a variety of topics. The Director of Field Experiences will work with you to find a nearby school for an experience that will meet your career goals, personal interests, schedule, and transportation restrictions. Your final semester will include an extensive internship as you complete the transition from observation to participation.

Customization. If you would like to expand your horizons and include another area that you are interested in, your academic advisor will work with you to ensure that you include the additional courses in your curriculum in the most efficient way possible. If you decide on a minor early on, you can typically take a few extra credits every semester to meet the requirements and not add any additional semesters.
