Welcome to the Department of English and Foreign Languages!
Language and culture are inseparable.
Until we gain access to other cultures through language, which opens our minds to new ways of thinking and understanding the world around us, we cannot begin to imagine how the world's cultural values differ. What was once considered strange suddenly becomes familiar, understandable, and attainable. The command of language widens the scope of our lives and exposes us to different ways of communicating.
At Barry University, our students automatically live in a multi-cultural community where bilingual technology provides daily information about events around the world. Located in the heart of the Miami-South Florida region, our students are exposed firsthand to the need for proficiency in a foreign language. In today's competitive work environment, knowing a second language is a must. Successful businesses and professional organizations will always depend on individuals with strong writing and language skills.
Studying even one language will dramatically increase your appreciation for the outside world.
It will introduce you to new ideas, customs, and values in both professional and personal ways. Just as the Internet has changed the way we think about the flow of information, the study of language eliminates the sense of distance between us and other countries. To further enhance exposure to other cultures, there are numerous affordable study programs abroad available to Barry students to complement their foreign language studies.
The department offers the following majors:
- Specialization in Literature
- Specialization in Professional Writing
- Specialization in Translation and Interpretation
- Specialization in Language and Literature
As you begin to study a foreign language, your progress may not always seem fast enough. But remember, each step of the way is significant. Languages are not learned all at once. Your speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills will improve over time. And the degree of your success will depend on your motivation and hard work.
The Department also offers a language minors program and non-degree programs, which are explained in more detail as you review our web site. If you would like additional information, you may also contact us at 305-899-3410; 1-800-756-8000, ext. 3410.
