Why Enroll in the Autism Education Endorsement Courses at Barry University?

Within the past decade the number of children diagnosed with Autism or Asperger’s syndrome has increased significantly; consequently, the need for qualified teachers in this specialized area has also increased significantly. In February 2003, the Florida Department of Education issued a memorandum informing all colleges and universities about the new Endorsement in Autism. The endorsement consists of 12 credits (four courses) beyond, or in addition to, a valid certificate in Exceptional Student Education (ESE). The endorsement in Autism may be added to a bachelor’s or master’s degree in ESE.

Barry University has developed the four new courses needed for the endorsement in Autism and will offer a minimum of two courses each semester on the main campus in Miami Shores. Within two short semesters, you may complete the 12 credits needed to apply for the endorsement and qualify to teach students with Autism.

The course numbers and titles are as follows:

ESE 673: Nature and Needs of Students with Autism
Explores the history of autism, as well as neurological, cognitive, and environmental theories. Focuses on the educational characteristics of students with autism and related disabilities (i.e., Autistic Spectrum Disorders – ASD). Describes the social interaction, social communication, and imagination impairments of students with autism. Presents issues of identification and referral to special education. Field experience required.

ESE 583A: Educational Assessment of Students with Exceptionalities: Focus on Autism
Proposes educational assessment techniques and procedures to provide an objective database for individualizing instruction for children with Autism. A major emphasis is placed on exploring assessment and diagnosis of children with autistic spectrum disorders.

ESE 527A: Management of Children with Emotional Handicaps: Focus on Autism
This course compares various behavioral management techniques appropriate for children with autism and children with emotional handicaps. Field experience required.

ESE 683: Instructional Strategies for Students with Autism: Technological and Communication Interventions
Surveys strategies appropriate for students with Autism, particularly the use of assistive and instructional technology, as well as natural, alternative, and augmentative communication systems. Field experience required.
