Biography
Sara C. Rytteke
Sara Rytteke was born and raised in Växjö, Sweden. She did her undergraduate education in Sweden, France, and US. In 2000 she received her Masters of Fine Arts degree at the University of Houston, Houston, TX. Sara Rytteke’s awards and honors include the 2006 Photography Fellowship sponsored by Houston Center for Photography, the 2002 Fellowship Award from Society for Contemporary Photography, Kansas City and Kronobergsläns Landstings Culture Stipend, Sweden in 1994. She has participated in over fifty exhibitions in various locations.
From the Black and White close-up selfportraits in 1994 to the 1998- 2002 series “On Art, Beauty and Persuasion” and the recent “Standards of Beauty” Sara Rytteke have continually explored the issue of female identity and influence from mass media and popular western cultural ideas; this exploration has taken several forms: magazine covers, paperdolls, postcards as well as the recent series relating to the Barbie doll.
