Top Ten Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where can my son or daughter stay when there are breaks or holidays?

The only time the residence halls are closed is during Christmas break. Fall Holiday, Thanksgiving, Spring Break and Easter the halls are open to the students.

2. Where can my son or daughter get help with computer problems?

They can get help through the Division of Information Technology and the Help Desk located on the second floor of Garner Hall. they can call 305-899-3604

3. What happens if my son or daughter becomes ill during the night or on a weekend?

If your son or daughter does become ill during this time there are health advisors that are on call that can help. They need to contact their resident advisor (RA) on duty and they will then contact the health advisor. The health advisors are nursing students that are able to give your son or daughter over the counter medicines and recommend that they see the nurse the next day or on Monday.

4. Will my son or daughter be charged for the university medical insurance even if he or she is already covered by another policy?

As long as they show proof that he or she is covered by another health insurance they will not be charged for university insurance.

5. What resources are available for personal or career advice?

The purpose of the Career and Counseling Center at Barry University is to offer the following in an atmosphere of respect and confidentiality:

  • Personal counseling and educational programs to all students, faculty and staff to enhance personal development.
  • Career development services to assist students, faculty, staff and alumni.

6. Where can my son or daughter study at night when the library is closed?

There are study lounges in Dalton and Dunspaugh Hall and the second floor of Weber Hall. They just need to show their student ID at the front desk.

7. Where can my son or daughter go to get something to eat after cafeteria hours?

There is a snack bar that stays open until 9:00 pm as well as a convenience store that is open until 10:00 pm, both are located in Thompson Hall. There are also vending machines in all of the residence halls.

8. Where can my son or daughter go if they are having problems in the residence halls?

They should go to their RA and talk about it. Their RA will advise all parties involved and help in any way. If the problem can not be resolved through the RA the student may come up the Office of Residential Life and talk with one of the area coordinator's (AC's).

9. Where can my son or daughter attend religious services?

There's a daily mass at 12:00 noon Monday through Friday. There are also two masses on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. that they can attend.

10. What kinds of activities are there for my son or daughter to do during the weekends?

Many students will go to the pool or the beach during the day. There are weekend trips that are hosted by a variety of organizations, they can contact Student Activities for more information.

Funds raised by the parents help Barry keep its doors open by providing operational expenses and scholarship money to many students. Helping their students now, many parents direct their gifts to student services, the library, and on-campus technology.
