We Reach Our Goals!!
Profile of Ana Jimenez, Ph.D. (MARC 1993)

When I came to Barry in 1991 I knew two things; I loved the sciences and I did not want to be a physician. For many students it is difficult to find and pursue a scientific career that is also personally fulfilling. What MARC did for me was to open a wide door to a world of opportunities that otherwise, I would not have been exposed to. As a MARC student one of the things that impressed me the most was the enthusiasm with which professors described their research, and the passion they had for their particular field. I immediately realized that they did not have a job, but a career doing what they love to do.

Ana Jimenez, Ph. DOnce I started getting ready to send my applications to graduate school, I reflected on how the MARC program was preparing me to be a competitive candidate. In most schools, the opportunity to do research at the undergraduate level is usually very limited. I was fortunate to work with Dr. Jeremy Montague, who taught me about sea urchins, but most importantly, taught me independence in the lab and how to pursue my own scientific interest. Through the MARC program, I also had the great opportunity to work full-time during the summer in a molecular biology laboratory at the University of Miami. During that time I gained hands-on experience on molecular biological techniques to address a clinical problem, and was also given the opportunity to visit other laboratories, find out about their academic programs, and introduce myself to program directors. Now I was ready to apply; I had made my career decision, and my first choice was the University of Miami.

In my senior year, faculty provided personal insights and professional guidance through the logistics of applying to several graduate programs, interviewing with many faculty and finally applying for a fellowship. I was thrilled when I found out that I had been accepted to the Neuroscience program at the University of Miami, and that I had been awarded a MARC pre-doctoral fellowship. Now that I have joined Barry as faculty I hope to help students find their career paths, and introduce them to research with the same enthusiasm that I was greeted with when I came as a student.
