Newsletter - Fall 2002 Graduate Awards / Accomplishments
Dirian Valdes-Guada (MARC'99) - received the first College of Education Minority Student Award. This award is presented to an outstanding graduate student of color who is active in working with equity issues. She also received The Holmes Scholar Research Assistantship. Dirian is a 4th year Ph.D. Psychology student at the University of Iowa. Parinda Parikh, MD (MBRS'94)- is currently completing the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Cornell University. She is engaged to be married soon. Edgar Tyson (MARC'94)- is the recipient of a Fellowship Award from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Edgar is a PhD Social Work student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Edgar also published in Journal of Poetry Therapy, 15(3):131-144, 2002, and Handbook on Violence:148-168, Wiley, NY, 2002. Dania Alarcon-Vargus (MBRS'95)- received the NIH Individual National Research Service Award. Her publications include: Carcinogenesis 23(4):541-547, 2002; Cancer, Biology and Therapy 1(3):235-240, 2002. Carolina Valdes (MIRT'99)- has been selected by the National Institute on Aging to receive an NIH Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA). She is conducting research in cardiovascular science.
