Faculty Accomplishments

Dr. John Boulos (Chemistry) and Dr. Ana Jimenez (Biology) received RISE funding to complete a 2-month internship at Queen's College, NY, and the University of Miami respectively, summer 2002. Dr. Boulos carried out research on the development of organometallic reagents that can recognize nucleic acids via intercalative interaction. Modified 1,10- and 4,7-phenanthroline Ru(II) complexes have shown to have significant biochemical or medical applications and are of primary synthetic targets. Dr. Jimenez conducted research on the development of microsurgery approach for osmotic pump infusion and immunohistochemistry of the Acetycholine alpha 9 and 10 receptor subunits of mouse cochlea.

Dr. Kayreen Burns, Professor of Psychology is "Faculty of the Year". Dr. Burns conducts research in Infant Development and many aspects of Clinical Assessment, and has mentored MARC students since 1992.

Dr. Allen Sanborn (Biology), has received the Ambassador Jean Wilkowski Fellowship to conduct foreign research and to add an international dimension to teaching.

Dr. Laura Mudd (Biology) has been appointed the spokesperson for the Archdiocese for Stem Cell research. Dr. Mudd was also an invited speaker at the Nova College of Osteopathic Medicine, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences research symposium in May, 2002.

Dr. George Fisher (Chemistry) received a grant for $18,000 from the Henry and Camille Dreyfus foundation for science education for elementary school teachers and students. Dr. Fisher was also elected to office of Chairman-Elect of the South Florida Section of the American Chemical Society for 2002, and will become chairman of the section in 2003.
