Newsletter - Fall 2006
Student Profile

Leonore Polo-Rodicio, PhD Shortly after I began my studies at Barry University in the Fall of 1991, a fellow student recommended that I take a look at the MARC program. By the Spring, I was enrolled in the pre-MARC program and the following year I continued on to the MARC program. It was an experience that forged the course of my professional life.

While at Barry, I majored in chemistry and minored in biology. I had the opportunity to conduct research with Dr. George Fisher on DMSO-racemization of aspartate. This research experience allowed me to use techniques and laboratory equipment that I continued to use through my postdoctoral work. In addition, I was able to work in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Bartlett at the University of California, Berkeley during the summer of 1993. I worked closely with a postdoctoral student carrying out organic syntheses of novel compounds. This once-in-a-lifetime experience was one that would not have occurred were I not in the MARC program.

Thanks to the courses offered at Barry together with my research experiences in the MARC program, I was accepted to five graduate programs. I chose to attend Louisiana State University. There, I worked in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Limbach developing techniques for the analysis of oligonucleotides and nucleic acids using mass spectrometry. After obtaining my Ph.D. in 1999, I moved back to Miami and worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Patrick J. Walsh at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences studying the effects of ammonia toxicity on the Gulf toadfish.

After a total of 8 years of research work and supervision of numerous undergraduate students, I realized that my vocation lay in teaching. I began teaching as an adjunct professor at Miami Dade College in the Fall of 2002 and soon after was hired as a fulltime faculty member in January 2003. One of the most fulfilling experiences as a college professor has been the ability to advise and guide my students to successful careers. I have never forgotten where my journey began. Since 2004, I have recommended three students to the MARC and MBRS programs—Collins Boston, Vivian Macachero, and Lina Arrencibia—all of whom have been highly successful.

Dr. Rodicio is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Miami Dade College. She is married with four children.
