Newsletter - Spring 2003

This edition of the Newsletter is dedicated to the 20 year accomplishments of the MARC U*STAR Program, 13 years of the MBRS and 10 years of the MIRT Program at Barry University. These accomplishments were celebrated with the MARC U*STAR 20th Anniversary Research Symposium, Barry University, February 13, 2003

20th anniversary of the NIH support MARC U*STAR programThe symposium with 411 attendees (Barry students, faculty, staff and administrators, high school and community college students and congressional staff members) highlighted a keynote address on bioterrorism, two presentations by NIH staff, 10 presentations by MARC/MBRS/MIRT Barry alumni and 37 current student and faculty poster presentations. The lunch session included a Lunchtime Musical Soiree accompanied by Dr. Alan Mason, and Barry’s Modern Dance Ensemble directed by Yvonne Houston. The day concluded with a reception (click here for photos).

This celebration coincides with the 30 year anniversary of the MARC and MBRS programs at the National Institutes of Health.

About the Programs

The MARC U*STAR / MIRT / MRBS RISE / MBRS SCORE and Bridges programs are supported by NIH to provide research opportunities for students and faculty.

MARC U*STAR scholars are biology, psychology, chemistry and mathematics majors who carry out research on campus and who will pursue a Ph.D. in their major. Scholars receive tuition and monthly stipend.

MIRT trainees major in biology and chemistry and carry out research during the summer in Italy, Jamaica, and Republic of Korea. Trainees receive travel, stipend and living expenses.

MBRS RISE students major in biology and chemistry and are paid to carry out research on-campus with faculty and off-campus during the summer.

MBRS SCORE has student technicians who carry out research with faculty in chemistry and biology. Technicians receive an hourly wage.

Bridges students enrolled in the Masters in Biomedical Sciences program carry out off-campus summer research at Vanderbilt University.
