- Spring 2003 Two Barry MARC/MBRS alumni, Dr. Karen Phillips, Ph.D. Organic Chemistry, Columbia University and Dania Alarcon-Vargas, Ph.D. candidate, Biomedical Science, Mt. Sinai Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, described some of the hurdles minorities face in research and how they can better prepare themselves to overcome them. Dania Alarcon-Vargas encouraged students to overcome any self-limitations they might have to overcome diversity. Students should become knowledgeable about opportunities, and be aggressive in their pursuit. Dr. Phillips discussed the initial hurdles she had to overcome including her immigrant status, lack of financial resources, lack of scholarship resources, lack of knowledge about “the system”, lack of family role models in higher education, and lack of knowledge of what it meant to be a minority. She reminded students to be aware of how important their achievements can be in inspiring other minority students. Dr. Phillips said that perhaps the biggest hurdle for many minorities is the lack of role models that they can truly identify with. |
