First Barry-Habitat House Dedicated

First Barry-Habitat House Dedicated Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin, President of Barry University, proudly dedicated the first ever university co-sponsored Habitat for Humanity house in South Florida on Saturday, January 17th , 2004 . The dedication went smoothly with the help of Anne Manning, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami; Sister Candace Introcaso, Vice President for Planning and Assessment at Barry University ; and homeowners Riva Perryman and her five children.

The event was covered by Channels 6 and 7, and the Miami Herald. Over 50 members of the faculty, staff, students, and friends of the university were present at this event, which marked the culmination of over two years of hard work by the members of the campus chapter.

The chapter extends its thanks to all of those who helped us reach this goal. Namely, the Divisions of Academic Affairs, Information Technology, and Student Services, the office of Mission and Ministry, Alumni Relations, Facilities Management, and the Executive Division. Special thanks to Sodexho Dining Services for sponsoring our lunches and to Intercollegiate Athletics for helping us with the sports drinks during the construction of this house. And thanks also to the Office of Corporate and Community Relations, Public Safety, Sodexho Dining Services, and University Relations for helping us setup the event.

The chapter is in the process of furnishing the house with the help of members of the Barry community. We have been able to secure many important items that will greatly help Riva when she moves; however, there are still some items missing. If you would like to help, please contact us at habitat@mail.barry.edu . There is still time to help; Riva is still waiting for the city to issue a certificate of occupancy to be able to move in. Hopefully this will happen by the second week of February.

Sister Jeanne to Dedicate First University Co-Sponsored Habitat House in South Florida

Sister Jeanne to Dedicate First University Co-Sponsored Habitat House in South Florida The Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter at Barry University is pleased to invite the Barry community to the dedication of the first ever university co-sponsored Habitat for Humanity house in South Florida on Saturday, January 17, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. Barry President Sr. Jeanne O'Laughlin, O.P., Ph.D., will accompany the homeowners, Riva Perryman and her five children, as they open the doors of their new home.

Habitat for Humanity International is a vital project dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 150,000 houses in more than 89 countries. This success has come through the support of a devoted volunteer workforce, the ability to secure no-interest mortgages for its families, and a true commitment to improving low income housing.

The Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity at Barry University has helped build over a dozen houses in Miami-Dade County, primarily in the Homestead area devastated by Hurricane Andrew. Additionally, our Campus Chapter has donated over 4,500 volunteer service hours to the Overtown section of Miami.

In September 13, 2003, the Barry community began construction. The Barry House dedication is the culmination of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the university who, in just two years, have obtained needed construction funds, often collecting pennies at a time. In January 2004, a mere four months later, a family of six will move in, having contributed 250 hours of their own “sweat equity” in the construction of their home.

We will be so pleased to have you attend the dedication of a new home for some very wonderful people. The Chapter looks forward to seeing you at the ceremony that will make a crucial difference in the life of the community, one family at a time.

The dedication ceremony will take place at the new home, 1951 NW 2nd Court, Miami, FL 33136, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17th. If you would like to request more information, please email habitat@mail.barry.edu
