Evelio Velis, MD, PhD

Dr. Evelio Velis is a Medical Doctor who graduated in 1983 from The Higher Institute of Medical Sciences, Havana, Cuba. He completed one year Vertical Internship in Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, where he practiced medicine as a Pediatrician for more than ten years. In 1990, after satisfying all the program requirements (First Degree Specialist in Biostatistics), he was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Biostatistics from the Faculty of Public Health. Dr. Velis also holds a Master of Science in Health Services Administration degree from Barry University.

Dr. Velis has designed, directed, advised, and performed Clinical and Epidemiological research projects in Africa, Cuba, Central America, the Caribbean Region, and United States. He has been passionately involved with research, health services, and public health environments for more than 30 years. He has been teaching at the university level, both graduate and undergraduate programs, for more than 20 years.

Dr. Velis is the Director and Associate Professor of the Master of Science Program in Health Services Administration and Health Services Administration and Public Health Dual Master's Degree program at Barry University. He also teaches Managerial Epidemiology, Applied Biostatistics, and Research Methods for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Nursing Ph.D. programs at the College of Health Sciences.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Velis is constantly involved with various research projects, especially in the clinical and public health fields. He has been published and presented studies related to health disparities, HIV/AIDS epidemic, homicide, diversity in the classroom, and other healthcare related events at national and international conferences. He has been recognized for his work as an advisor for residents and fellows performing clinical and epidemiological research projects as part of their Residency and Fellowship training programs at the Miami Children's Hospital and Cleveland Clinic of Florida.

He is a member of the Inter-American College of Physicians and Surgeons, American Public Health Association (APHA), the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), Solidarity Without Borders, American Statistical Association, American College of Health Care Executives, and South Florida Executive Forum.
