About HEP

The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) is an educational project which offers families with migrant or seasonal farmwork backgrounds, a unique opportunity to obtain a General Educational Development diploma or GED.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Migrant Education, HEP provides GED instruction in English or Spanish and individualized tutoring. Upon successful completion of the Program, students are encouraged to continue their education and are assisted with placement services.

Eligibility

Prospective students must:

  • Not be enrolled in school, lack a high school diploma or its equivalent and be at least 16 years or older.
  • You or your parent must be a migrant OR temporary/seasonal farm or fish industry worker OR have worked in packing houses or nurseries OR have been a recent participant in a Title I Migrant Program OR be eligible for service under the JTPA Program, WIA section 167.
  • Document an agricultural, farm or fish industry related work history during the last 24 months for at least 75 days.

What HEP Offers

HEP offers its students the following:

  • Assistance in enrolling in the Program.
  • Instruction (English/Spanish) in Math, Social Studies, Science, Literature and Writing.
  • Instructional materials
  • Individualized career goal setting
  • All test fees provided
  • Housing (for summer programs)
  • Meals (for summer program)
  • Assistance with transportation
  • Job, career and college counseling

Placement Services

Students are assisted with services such as:

  • Career Counseling
  • Postsecondary Education Institution Guidance
  • Military Services
  • Technical / Vocational Schools
  • Life Enhancement Workshops
