Barry University to Host Free Virtual Health Camp for High School Students

(MIAMI, FL) As the school year comes to a close, with many parents wondering how to keep their kids engaged this summer while still practicing social distancing, Barry University announced its annual Health Camp is going virtual.

The weeklong free program, traditionally held on campus for a small group of students selected after a rigorous application process, is now open to all high school students interested in potentially joining the nation’s next generation of health care heroes.

“The pandemic has shone a spotlight on the vital role of so many of our health care professionals,” said Dr. John McFadden, Dean of Barry’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “We are pleased to be able to offer a free virtual ‘hands on’ experience to introduce students to these critical occupations with sessions led by our expert faculty.”

The program will be conducted via an online platform, with participants engaging in activities like how to suture, read an EKG and swaddle a baby. Many will have access to a virtual simulation lab to practice running health care scenarios at home.

With more than 200 students already signed up, Dr. Lauren Schwal, who is running the camp, says the demand is inspiring. “As a nurse, it is amazing to see how many young people are interested in going into healthcare right now in the midst of a global pandemic,” she says.

Students will learn about a range of professional options, from Nursing and Nurse Anesthesia, to Biomedical Sciences, Podiatric Medicine, the Physician Assistant profession, Exercise Physiology, being an Emergency Medical Technician and more.

The program will run June 8-12, 2020. More information is available here.
