History
students at Barry University receive a broad liberal arts education
within the framework of the University's commitment to a quality
education. Students who major in history are provided with intensive
training in research, in critical thinking and in the art of writing.
Students are, therefore, prepared for careers in a wide choice of
fields, including the corporate and business world, professional
work in libraries and museums, the practice of law, government service,
and teaching on the secondary and college levels.
Course of Study
Students majoring in history at Barry currently
take 33 credits in the major. They are encouraged to minor in a
related discipline of their choice. Courses in Western Civilization,
United States History and a senior capstone course taken in the
senior year and required for the major. There are regular offerings
in three main fields: Latin America, the United States, and Modern
Europe. The department frequently offers courses in topics of special
interest to students.
Internships
Students also have an opportunity to do
independent study on topics of interest, and internships in various
approved agencies. Internships offer opportunities for valuable
experience in historical research or preservation, in archival work,
or in public policy. Our students have interned at a number of historical
agencies in South Florida and at the Summit of the Americas, a gathering
in Miami of heads of governments from all over Central and South
America.
