China Study Abroad Program 2012

June 22, 2012 – July 20, 2012

Honors Program (HP) students will have an opportunity to participate in China Study Abroad program. This is an opportunity for HP students to put into practice the classroom lessons they have acquired through their Honors Program's coursework on topics ranging from cultural identity to global interdependence. HP students will have hands-on experience when participating in the China Study Abroad program during the 28-day extensive cultural immersion into the Chinese culture. Students will spend two weeks at a university in China and another two weeks visiting cultural and historical sites in Shanghai, Xi'an, and Beijing. The 3 credit hours can be used to fulfill elective credits within a major or in general.

Through this overseas travel experience, students will have a chance to conduct a comparative analysis between U.S. and China in terms of cultural values, historical events, and people. Students will also have opportunity to engage in a series of conversation with Chinese students while at a University in China. This opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas will have a profound impact upon a student's perception of his/her own culture and the world. The implication of this kind of overseas experience can be anticipated in different ways according to majors. In general, students who participate in this program will have ample opportunity to become aware of fundamental international economic, political, cultural, and historical patterns. Today's students are motivated to take part in a life-long learning experience, improve their intercultural communication skills, and find ways to overcome cultural barriers. Specifically, students from different majors will acquire an awareness, understanding, and appreciation that are specific to their majors. For example, education majors can expect to have a more in-depth understanding of their future Chinese American students in the American classroom and their ability to reach out to the Chinese American parents of their students; Business majors will have a first-hand experience to witness China's global economic impact on the rest of the world (particularly South & Central America and North America). Additionally, Biology and other science majors will have the opportunity to interact with their Chinese science major counterparts.
