Honors Program at Barry

Designed to push the best and brightest toward a lifetime of learning, Barry University's Honors Program challenges, enriches, and prepares especially motivated students to pursue their fullest potential. Participants will face a rigorous curriculum, more complicated issues, and tougher questions. The Office of Financial Aid can assist with determining eligibility. 

Hosted by faculty and students, the Honors Program offers the Barry community an array of edifying and interactive events throughout the year. They are focused on relevant and important topics that explore history, philosophies, or policies -- all of which speak to the issues that we face in our daily lives. There’s space for discussion and debate at these events, as well as learning from experts in their fields.

  • The Honors Program students listed the following reasons as their main reasons for joining the program:

    • the availability of the scholarship,
    • the intellectual exchanges between the Honors Program faculty and students,
    • the accessibility to the Honors Program computer lab,
    • the opportunity to attend conferences, and
    • the camaraderie among the Honors Program peers.

How do I Qualify?

Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to the Honors Program to take advantage of all the benefits, especially Honors courses. Refer to the timelines below to see when you can apply!

Deadlines

  • Fall semester: July 15th
  • Spring semester: December 15th
  • Under Test-Score Pathway, applicants

    • Submit test score (SAT 1310 or ACT 28); and
    • Attain a minimum high school GPA of 3.70.

    Under Test-Optional Pathway, applicants

    • Attain a minimum unweighted high school GPA of 3.70.
    • Complete the developmental English (ENG 095) or are place in ENG 111, without a supplemental instruction, prior to an enrollment in the Honors Program courses.
    • Attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7 from a regionally accredited university.
    •  Complete all developmental courses.

How do I Apply?

    • Complete the undergraduate application for admission.
    • Send official transcripts from previously attended high school and official SAT or ACT score reports to:

    • You will not need to complete a separate application to be considered. After admission to the University has been determined, eligible applicants for Barry University's Honors Program will be sent a formal invitation to join our Honors Program.
  • International Applicants to Barry University will need to fulfill the following:

    • Complete the undergraduate application for admission. 
    • Send official transcripts, certificates, or mark sheets and/or diplomas from previously attended secondary institutions to:

      Recruitment and Admissions

      Miami Shores, FL 33161
    • Although, the SAT or ACT is not required to determine admission, it is required to be considered for admission to the Honors Program.
    • Applicants from countries where English is not the native language will need to provide proof of English proficiency demonstrated by the TOEFL or IELTS examination. The minimum score for full admission to a degree program is 61 internet based or 550 (paper based) or 6.0 on the IELTSPlease contact our admission office for further details at admissions@barry.edu.
    • You will not need to complete a separate application to be considered. After admission to the University has been determined, eligible applicants for Barry University's Honors Program will be sent a formal invitation to join our Honors Program.

    • You will not need to complete a separate application to be considered. After admission to the University has been determined, eligible applicants for Barry University's Honors Program will be sent a formal invitation to join our Honors Program.

    • Applicants from countries where English is not the native language will need to provide proof of English proficiency demonstrated by the TOEFL examination. However, applicants who have attended a US institution and have earned at least 24 credits are not required to take the TOEFL examination. Please contact our admission office for further details at admissions@barry.edu.
    • You will not need to complete a separate application to be considered. After admission to the University has been determined, eligible applicants for Barry University's Honors Program will be sent a formal invitation to join our Honors Program.

Scholarship

As an Honors Program student, you may qualify for the Honors Program Scholarship of up to $5,000 per academic year. The scholarship is guaranteed for the duration of your bachelor's degree program at Barry provided that you meet the program's requirements. 

Student athletes receiving any type of athletic funding are not eligible to receive an Honors Scholarship.

The Honors Program requirements include:

  • Enrollment at Barry as a full-time undergraduate student (which requires completion of a minimum of 12 credits per semester).
  • Maintaining a minimum semester GPA and cumulative GPA of 3.5.
  • Participation in Honors Program events.
  • Completion of Honors Program courses

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS IF I CHOOSE TO JOIN THE HONORS PROGRAM?

Being an Honors Program student is translated into several benefits. For example:

  • Attend small classes, usually with 10 to 15 students, giving you ample opportunities to engage in in-depth classroom discussions. The intellectual exchange and camaraderie between faculty and peers are among the top reasons students choose to join and stay in the program.  
  • Take courses reserved for only Honors Program students.
  • Gain excellent leadership skills on the Honors Program Student Advisory Board.
  • Embark on an independent research project, preparing you for graduate studies and professional careers.
  • Have a chance to present your research paper at Honors conferences.
  • Sign up for Honors Housing.
  • Get exclusive access to the Honors Lounge/computer lab in Bevilacqua Hall Ste. 148.
  • Contribute to the student published and produced Honors Program Newsletter.
