Admissions
Physical Education K12 (BS)

To apply to Barry's undergraduate program in physical education, you must first apply for admission to Barry University. Upon admission to Barry University, you can be granted interim acceptance into the physical education program. Once you have met all interim acceptance requirements or achieved junior status (completed 60 credits applicable to your degree), you can apply for full acceptance to the Physical Education major. Additional requirements must be met for full acceptance to the program.

The School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences has implemented this 2-step process to help ensure your success and to ensure that graduates of the program will leave Barry as qualified, competent professionals. The steps in this application process are outlined below.

Application to Barry University
To apply to Barry University, you must submit the following to the Office of Admissions:

  • A completed undergraduate application . This application can be electronically submitted.
  • Application fee of US $30. Please make your nonrefundable application fee payable to Barry University
  • Official high school transcripts and all college/university transcripts
  • Official SAT I or ACT scores
  • If you are an international student whose first language is not English, you must also submit a TOEFL score. Educational records - transcripts, record of marks, school-leaving examinations - must be accompanied by certified English translations if in a language other than English.

Physical Education Teacher Education Program (PE-TEP) Acceptance Criteria

  1. To pursue a major in Physical Education, you must pass proficiency tests in several locomotor, sports skills, and basic knowledge areas. These tests are administered in the first semester that you declare the major. You must pass all proficiency tests prior to being "fully accepted" into the PE-TEP. Opportunities to improve any deficiencies identified are provided through the broad selection of ISR course offerings.
  2. Permission to enroll in the PE-TEP methods course sequence (SES 470/476) requires passing EDU 151 and EDU 218 with a C or better and full acceptance into the major. The requirements for full acceptance are as follows:
    • Completion of SES 210 (Foundations of Sport and Exercise) with a C or better
    • Successful completion of all proficiency tests as stipulated in #1 above
    • A 2.50 cumulative GPA;
    • A 2.50 average GPA in all SES and EDU courses combined
    • A satisfactory score on all sections of the General Knowledge Tests, or CLAST
    • Junior status OR completion of all SES department "Interim Acceptance" requirements
    • Recommendation of the Physical Education Program Coordinator
    • Recommendation of the SES Faculty Review Panel

You should submit applications for FULL ACCEPTANCE to your faculty advisor or the PE Program Coordinator well in advance of seeking enrollment in the methods course sequence.
  3. If you meet most, but not all, of the requirements for Full Acceptance into the PE-TEP, you may petition in writing for special consideration by the Physical Education program coordinator, the department chair, and the HPLS dean. This must be done prior to seeking enrollment in the methods course sequence. If permission is given to enroll in SES 470/476, you will be granted a temporary extension and placed on continued INTERIM ACCEPTANCE with stipulated conditions that must be met at the end of one, possibly two, more semesters. If these stipulated conditions have not been satisfied at the end of the extended period, you will be withdrawn from the PE-TEP major. If you meet all stipulated conditions, you will be fully accepted.
  4. SES 499, Internship and Seminar-PE Student Teaching, meets the integrative experience requirement for graduation. In order to be granted permission by the department chair and dean to enroll in SES 499, you must satisfy the following conditions:
    • Meet all requirements for FULL ACCEPTANCE into the PE-TE
    • Pass SES 470/476 with a C or better
    • Participate in the FTCE general and subject area competency tests.

You must receive a passing score on all sections of the FTCE in order to receive a final grade in SES 449 and graduate.
