Message from the Dean

Kluka

Welcome to the School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences! The School is greater than the collection of its three departments: Campus Recreation and Wellness, Intercollegiate Athletics, and Sport and Exercise Sciences. It is a school making substantive contributions to excellence in glocal (global through local) initiatives in education, community service and scholarship. It is the School that uniquely blends physical, intellectual and social/spiritual dimensions that facilitate the transformation of human potential through sport and physical activity.

We are on track with the development of the School’s five-year strategic plan, guided by our vision, mission and value statements. Our five-year strategic plan is driven by three specific elements: Visibility – programs, projects and initiatives at local through international levels; Communication and collaboration – on and off campus; and International initiatives – teaching, scholarship and glocal community outreach.

As a School, we have created Memos of Understanding (MOUs) for Barry University with the following universities: University of Pretoria, South Africa; University of Beira Interior, Portugal; Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education; Santo Tomas University, Colombia; University of North West, South Africa; and Zinman College of Wingate Institute, Israel. We plan to connect with others in the near future.

Facilities renovations continue. Men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms, gymnasium floor, Athletic Training Room, Strength and Conditioning Room, and Athletic Training Laboratory have all been renewed. Physical activity, recreation and athletics facilities figure prominently in the University’s Master Plan.

As our School continues to move forward with our 21st century vision, mission, values and goals, we hope you will join us in the adventure. Please connect with us via: our website, email, dkluka@barry.edu; Facebook, or phone, 305-899-3554.
