April 2009: Semi Annual Barry University/ IAHD "Try SCUBA" Event Makes Big Splash in Key Largo Florida
The participants for the semi-annual International Association of Handicapped Divers "Try SCUBA" event and the volunteers made this event memorable. Not only did students work very closely with disabled Iraq War veterans, but SMDI Graduate Marissa Wiganowske was showcased as she led a quadriplegic individual on their first open water SCUBA Dive in John Pennekamp State Park.
The turnout for the event was excellent, weather was great, all of the dive operations went smoothly, and the Barry divers were able to get valuable hands-on experience in an open ocean setting with divers possessing differing ability levels. Because the event has been so successful, it will now be occurring bi-annually, with the next event planned for sometime in October, 2009.
