Emerging Dive Professionals Showcased at DEMA's Deep Ambitions Career Fair

The 2006 Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) show took place November 8th –November 11th in Orlando, Florida. Barry University staffed a SMDI promotional booth at the show with junior and senior student-majors. As this is the premier annual gathering for the dive industry, it is the place for networking for internship sites and career opportunities throughout the world.

This year DEMA unveiled the Deep Ambitions Career Fair, which was designed to introduce high school students (ages 16-18) to the dive industry and possible aquatic careers. Barry University was purposefully selected to be involved with Deep Ambitions because members of the dive industry understand how important young divers are to the future of our industry. Barry students volunteered to take interested teens and parents on a tour of the show, answering their questions and explaining different exhibitors to them.

The interaction between the Barry students and the high school visitors was a success, and we have been invited back next year as ambassadors for Deep Ambitions. Since the main purpose of the Career Fair was to spark a dive-related interest in young people, hopefully some of them will choose to turn that interest into a career with the help of the Sport Management Diving Industry program here at Barry.
