Graduate Assistants

Graduate Research Assistant 

Graduate Research Assistantships are offered through the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to (1) assisting graduate faculty with essential elements of scientific inquiry; (2) data collection and entry, participant recruitment; (3) assisting with grant applications, literature reviews, pilot testing, and (4) scholarly writing.  Graduate student applicants must have experience with research methods and be in a thesis track in their program.  Appointments are for one year. A second year of a student’s two-year program may also be granted.

Graduate Assistant, Athletic Training 

In this program, the graduate assistant positions offered through the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences are available in two formats. Two on-campus appointments of two years each include assignments to collegiate teams and responsibilities for mentoring pre-clinical undergraduate program majors in athletic training. The second format available is for off-campus single or multiple year assignments to area high schools serving as substitute instructional staff with additional responsibility as assistant or head athletic trainer.

Graduate Assistant, Campus Recreation 

Graduate Assistant positions are offered through The Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to (1) officiating in various competitive and non-competitive sports at an intramural level; (2) recruiting, training, and supervising work-study staff; (3) assisting with marketing and promotion of all recreational activities and programs; and (4) instructing and/or assisting in wellness class offerings. A bachelor's degree from an accredited university is required, and the applicant must be pursuing either a Sport Management or Exercise Science master's degree through Barry's Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

Graduate Assistant, Sports Information 

The sports information graduate assistant is responsible for assisting the director of sports information in publicizing Barry's 12-sport intercollegiate athletics program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to (1) writing press releases, (2) assisting with production of media guides and game programs, (3) helping with home event management for all sports, as well as (4) handling other duties as assigned. A bachelor's degree from an accredited university in journalism, English, communications or related field is required. Applicants should have solid writing and interpersonal communication skills, and previous experience working with Stat Crew software for Basketball and The Automated Scorebook for baseball / softball, soccer and volleyball. In addition, the successful candidate should have experience working with desktop publishing software including PageMaker and PhotoShop. (S)he must be willing to work during home events, at night and on weekends.

Graduate Assistant, Athletic Administration 

This position is one requiring a responsible motivated student who has completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university. An undergraduate degree in sport management is preferred. Responsibilities in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics include, but are not limited to: (1) working with the assistant to the dean in supporting the department's Student-Athlete Success Program, assisting in daily operations, and (2) interacting effectively with students, faculty, staff, and coaches. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office software, and ability to organize/prioritize/follow through on projects is necessary.
