HPLS adds new degree program in Applied Sport and Exercise Science

The Barry University School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences is pleased to announce the addition of a new degree program with a foundation in movement science. The Bachelor of Science program in Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences (SESA) will prepare interested students for multiple career options in the fields of sport, exercise, and recreation. 

The SESA program utilizes a hands-on approach to develop students who are adaptive to the physical needs of others, creative, collaborative, culturally sensitive, empathetic, knowledgeable, proactive, reflective, ethical, and professional. The program prepares students to examine and apply the knowledge and skills learned in the program to sport, exercise, and recreational settings while working to improve current fitness challenges prevalent throughout society. 

The Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences program takes a personal, holistic approach, so you can create your path to success based on your individual interests and needs. The program allows for multiple elective options to provide you with a broad, high-quality academic experience. With a degree in Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences, students prepare for professional opportunities in a variety of sport fields and physical activity/wellness settings in the community, corporate, health-related, and recreation areas.

A major in Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences will help to prepare you to obtain the following certifications: 

  • American College of Sports Medicine – Certified Personal Trainer Certification
  • American Council of Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainer
  • Florida Department of Education Coaching Endorsement

The curriculum includes many exciting and innovative courses ranging from recreation management to sport and exercise science law. The program consists of 17 SES Core Requirements and 29 credits in Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences.

SES 270 – Concepts of Fitness & Wellness
SES 335 – Intro to Sports Psychology
SES 340 – Adapted Physical Activity in Sport and Recreation
*SES 360 + lab – Essentials of Exercise Physiology
SES 480 – Contemporary Issues & Ethics in Sport

CS 180 – Introduction to Computers
SES 262 – Recreational Leadership
SES 320 – Kinesiology
SES 320L – Kinesiology Laboratory
SES 326 – Principles of Motor Learning
SES 330 – Nutrition for Physical Performance
SES 465 – Administration of Programs and Facilities
SES 480 – Practicum (2 courses, 6 credits)
SES 485 – Introduction to Law in Sport and Exercise Sciences
SES 499 – Internship 

Concentration Options:

12 credits in one of three concentrations are required. Concentration options are available in coaching, fitness specialist, or recreation management
