On Saturday, March 16, faculty and students from Barry’s School of Human Performance Science and Leisure Sciences hit the beach for the kickoff of Miami-Dade County’s annual Baynanza event.
Hosted throughout March and April each year, Baynanza is a way of celebrating one of South Florida’s most precious natural resources, Biscayne Bay. The celebration features more than 30 events and culminates with the annual Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day, the largest shoreline cleanup in Miami-Dade County.
The HPLS group consisted of 13 students from the exercise physiology program and were organized by Dr. Constance Mier, professor of exercise physiology. The students spent the morning paddling canoes and kayaks to an island off Deering Estates to collect garbage and debris from the island.
In addition to the community service, the official opening reception featured a photography exhibit by Mier titled “Biscayne Bay’s Wild Western Shoreline.” The exhibit features a series of still photographs of the Biscayne Bay coastline taken from a canoe.
