The purpose of the Frank J. Rooney School of Adult and Continuing Education is to provide adult students with undergraduate/graduate credit, non-credit, and certificate programs which recognize the educational needs of adult learner and promote life-long learning.

The school seeks to attract a diverse student body and to show a caring attitude toward each student regardless of individual backgrounds.

Recognizing the breadth of experience of adults, course offerings afford opportunities for further exploration of truth within the Judeo-Christian and Dominican tradition.

General Information

  • Standard Office hours are from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm.  The Miami Shores’ office operates from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm. Please check our Locations page for each site’s specific operating hours.
  • Our accelerated degree programs are offered over three Semesters-- Fall, Spring and Summer. The Fall and Spring Semesters are each divided into two, eight week sessions, and the Summer Semester is one, 8 week session. Therefore, students can register for classes in August, October, January, March, and June.
  • Classes meet for four hours once a week typically at night or during the day on Saturday. Some daytime classes are also available Monday thru Friday. 
  • Classes are small, usually 20-30 students.
  • Up to 90 credits accepted in transfer from all sources.
  • Our faculty is specialized in teaching adults.
  • You can receive college credit for experiential learning.
  • Free academic, career, and personal advisement is offered to all our students.

    Experiential Learning

    The Experiential Learning program at Barry University's School of Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) has been in place since the School began in 1974. In response to the needs and competencies demonstrated by adult learners, the School offers a variety of methods to validate college-level learning acquired in non-traditional ways.

    Students may receive credits toward their degrees by developing an experiential learning portfolio (up to 30 credits).   The learning portfolio recognizes and validates learning from professional and community activities.

    Additionally, credit for testing includes the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), the Advanced Placement Program (APP), the Defense Activity for Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES), and Barry University Challenge Tests. Licensure credit, non-traditional transfer credit for military coursework (American Council on Education-Military) and the Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction (PONSI) are also accepted toward degree completion.  Please refer to the Assessment and Prior Learning Fact Book.
