Student Insurance
Adequate health insurance coverage is a major issue facing today's college students. With the rising cost of health care coverage, many students are challenged to obtain health care due to the fact that they are either uninsured or under insured. Upon entry to Barry University a great deal of our student population is covered by private insurance plans. However as the years pass, many students lose coverage for one reason or another. In addition, many international plans and out-of-state managed care plans are not transferable to the Miami area. Unfortunately, when individuals covered by out-of-area managed care plans do have occasional illnesses requiring prescriptive care, they are forced to seek emergency room care. This is a major inconvenience resulting in long waiting times and frequent claim denials for non-emergent care provided in a hospital setting. This can result in large out-of- pocket expenses. For the protection of all of our students Barry University has a strict policy regarding health insurance coverage.
All fulltime students are recommended and all students residing in campus housing and all international students attending Barry University on an F-1 or J-1 visa are required to obtain adequate health insurance. The annual premium for the health insurance plan offered through the SHC is added to all incoming resident and international student's account. Students with adequate alternative coverage may request cancellation of the insurance fee by submitting an online waiver form at www.SRStudentcenter.com
Due to the inconsistency of many privately sponsored international insurance plans, beginning fall, 2007, all International students attending Barry University on an F-1 or J-1 visa will need to purchase the student insurance plan unless they are covered by an embassy insurance plan or an United States corporate sponsored plan through an employer.
Adequate coverage is defined as insurance benefits comparable to the SHC sponsored plan:
- access to primary care (emergency only care is not comparable coverage)
- Inpatient coverage of 80% of Usual and customary reimbursement
- prescriptive medications
- inpatient and outpatient mental health benefits (including alcohol and substance abuse treatment)
- an individual deductible not to exceed $1000
- Maternity benefits
- the insurance company must be licensed to do business in the State of Florida
International Insurance must include all the above plus:
- Repatriation of $10,000
- Medical Evacuation of $25,000
- Claims Agent in the United States
- Claims payable in United States dollars
Students with limited out of area coverage or otherwise inadequate coverage are urged to carefully review their options before waiving the SHC sponsored insurance plan. Deadlines to waive the insurance are prior to the first 31days of the semester. Those student who are required to maintain adequate insurance who do not submit an approved waiver form will be automatically billed a nonrefundable fee for one year of the Barry University sponsored plan.
There are three student sponsored plans offered to all fulltime undergraduate and all graduate students taking 4 or more credits. The traditional Miami campus plan provides coverage for all undergraduate students. The graduate and distant site plan provides coverage for students who do not have access to the main campus SHC. Both plans provide an option for dependent coverage. The supplemental policy is designed to provide SHC coverage only for students who are covered by private insurance but prefer to receive their health care at the SHC.
The current student health insurance plan is underwritten by:
Student Insurance Division
805 Executive Center Drive West Suite 200
St. Petersburg , Florida 33702
1-800-237-0903
Due to multiple changes in the insurance industry, it is the responsibility of the student to submit an approved insurance waiver on an annual basis.
Delaying health care can negatively effect the student's academic progression. Barry offers a very affordable student health plan. To better serve our students, the student Health Center is pleased to offer 3 plans for our diverse student population for the 2006/2007 academic year.
Our primary Student Health Plan is designed for our undergraduate population to cover 100% of all services provided at the Student Health Center , including vaccinations ($100 max) and well physicals. The plan pays 80% of in-network services at off-site providers after deductibles and co-payments apply.
We are pleased to once again offer a supplemental plan for the 2006/2007 academic year to students with a primary insurance plan. This plan is designed specifically for use at the Student Health Center for students that have limited transportation to off-campus providers. This plan provides 100% coverage for all services offered at the Student Health Center , including vaccinations and well physicals up to a maximum of $1000 per injury or sickness.
Our third plan is designed specifically for our graduate students and students taking classes at distant site campuses. This plan is designed to better address the needs of the adult student population.
