Family Law Moot Court Team finishes second at Gabreilli Competition

Mar 17, 2008

Making its case once again, the Barry University Family Law Moot Court Team beat out several other law school teams from the across the country to finish second at the 2008 Domenick L. Gabreilli National Family Law Moot Court Competition in Albany, New York. The competition took place March 6-9.

Barry’s team, consisting of Kelly Cavanaugh, Anita Mamone and Kelly Owen, swept through the preliminary rounds and dominated the head to head match ups to roll into the finals. During the rigorous preliminary round, Barry Law School earned one of the coveted 16 spots in the main event. In making it to the finals, Barry defeated teams from Stetson University, Syracuse University, Brooklyn University, University of Texas, Widener University and many others.

The performace by Mamone, Owen and Cavanaugh earned Barry its best finish in moot court competition this year. The team worked exceptionally hard to prepare for this year’s grueling competition, writing a brief, arguing twice in the preliminary round on Thursday, arguing twice on Friday and arguing two more times on Saturday to make it to the finals. This is the second year in a row that Barry has finished strong at the Gabrielli Competition. Last year these same three students competed in this competition and advanced to the quarterfinals, ultimately finishing in fifth place.
