Judge Gierke has enjoyed a challenging and balanced career as a legal practitioner, litigator, jurist, teacher, and mentor. For the past twenty-five years, Judge Gierke has served as an appellate judge, first for eight years as a Justice on the North Dakota Supreme Court, and, for the last fifteen years, as an Associate Judge and more recently as the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C. In his career as an appellate judge, Judge Gierke has participated in deciding more than 3500 cases and has authored over 700 judicial opinions.
Judge Gierke has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to the education of young lawyers serving on the adjunct faculty at three law schools. Since 1998, he has been an Instructor of Law teaching Trial Advocacy at The Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law of Barry University. Between 1992 and 2006, Judge Gierke served as a Professorial Lecturer in Law at The George Washington University School of Law in Washington, D.C. teaching Trial Advocacy and Comparative Military Law. The student body of George Washington selected Judge Gierke to receive The Distinguished Adjunct Service Award in 2002. From 1995 until 2006, Judge Gierke was a Lecturer at The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C., where he taught Trial Practice, Advanced Trial Practice, and Comparative Military Law. In 2002 and again in 2004, The Student Body of the Columbus School of Law selected Judge Gierke as the Outstanding Adjunct Professor of the Year.
Judge Gierke's most recent publications include: "The Use of Article III Case Law in Military Jurisprudence," Army Law., Aug. 2005, at 35, "Five Questions About the Military Justice System," 56 A.F.L. Rev. 249 (2005), and "Message From the Mall," 51 Fed. Law. 30 (2004).
Judge Gierke has received numerous honors for his distinguished public service and commitment to legal education. His most recent awards in 2005 include the North Dakota Distinguished Service Medal, and an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of North Dakota. At its 2006 Columbus School of Law commencement ceremony, Judge Gierke received The President's Medal, Catholic University's highest honor, for his "outstanding achievement in areas of endeavor consonant with the mission of the University." |
