Orlando, Fla. -- The U.S. detention policies in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, will be examined during the 2012 Barry Law Review symposium to be held Friday, Feb. 24. The symposium, titled Guantánamo’s Legacy: Reflections on a Decade of Detention, will feature a series of hour-long panel discussions among a diverse group of nationally prominent legal scholars who will discuss the law of war, military commissions, interactions between Guantánamo and the U.S. Constitution, effects on the legal profession, and repercussions for U.S. national security.
Featured speakers at the symposium include:
Jordan Paust, the Mike and Teresa Baker Law Center Professor of International Law at the Law Center of the University of Houston. He has served on and chaired numerous committees on international law, human rights, laws of war, terrorism, and the use of force in the American Society of International Law, the American Branch of the International Law Association, and the American Bar Association.
Peter Jan Honigsberg, Professor of Law at the University of San Francisco School of Law and Director of the Witness to Guantánamo project, which documents the systematic human rights abuses and rule of law violations at Guantánamo Bay. Professor Honigsberg has published numerous articles including Chasing Enemy Combatants and Circumventing International Law: A License for Sanctioned Abuse and Inside Guantánamo. He is the author of the critically acclaimed book Our Nation Unhinged: The Human Consequences of the War on Terror.
The Feb. 24 symposium will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Legal Advocacy Center on Barry University School of Law campus at 6441 East Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL 32807.
Registration includes lunch and is $50 before Feb. 10 and $60 on or after Feb. 10. Attorneys can receive 6.5 Florida Bar CLE credit hours.
