Preparing You for Success

Students prepare a case brief in preparation for class during a formal study group meeting. Part of the Academic Success Program, formal study groups feature upper division students as Study Group Leaders teaching study sessions to supplement and reinforce classroom learning.

Academic Success Program at Barry Law

Improving and enhancing study skills is the goal of the Academic Success Program (ASP) at Barry Law.  By taking advantage of the various facets of the program including the on-campus Writing Center, the Study Skills program, and individual counseling, law students will gain a valuable edge.

The Writing Center

Thanks to Dean Diaz and Associate Dean Birdsong, the Writing Center now has its own location on campus!  It is located behind the Bookstore, and it will be open Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00AM to 6:00PM, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00AM to 9:00PM, and Fridays by appointment.  A total of nine 2L and 3L students were carefully selected to be Writing Center Leaders.  They will mainly assist students with their Legal Research and Writing assignments in the areas of grammar, punctuation, structure, and style.

Study Skills Program

An additional eighteen talented students were selected to be Study Skills Leaders this fall.  They will be helping our students make the transition into law school by utilizing a skills-based curriculum.  The Study Skills Program is voluntary and targets our first-year students; however, all students are invited and encouraged to participate.  Weekly workshops are strategically scheduled throughout the semester where Study Skills Leaders will introduce the students to different study strategies and exam-taking techniques.  In addition, two large panel discussions will be held to provide an open forum for students to ask questions and seek advice from the Study Skills Leaders and participating professors.

Individual Counseling

The program Director will be available to meet individually with any student seeking to improve his or her study skills, or to help identify problems interfering with the student’s academic performance.  The Study Skills Leaders and Writing Center Leaders will also be holding office hours to meet individually with students who seek their help on an individual basis.
