Internship
The internship is a full semester, and is the culminating academic experience for students in the LRM major. The internship provides students the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a professional environment. The advisor/program coordinator helps the student select an appropriate agency based on career goals and preparation. These agencies may include travel businesses and resorts, park districts, recreation departments, residential camps, cruise ships, municipal, state and national parks, and public or private enterprises in leisure, wilderness, or outdoor education pursuits. During the internship, the student will work under the guidance, observation, and supervision of an agency professional and departmental advisor/program coordinator, who will evaluate the student.
Interns and graduates of the Barry University LRM program may find opportunities within the following: Convention services, travel agencies, travel/tourism bureaus, outdoor outfitters, guide services, ecotourism agencies, cruise lines, hotels, resorts, motor home parks, campgrounds, recreation communities, city, county, or regional recreation government agencies including parks and public recreation programs and departments, theme parks, special events companies, natural resource management, recreation management, state and federal agencies including parks, forests, wildlife areas and water resources, conservation organizations, and various entertainment providers.
The 3 hour elective component in this major may allow students to acquire special certifications that will prepare them to assume positions of leadership within specific outdoor adventure industries, such as Outward Bound or Project Adventure. |
