Minor in Environmental Studies

A minor in Environmental Studies is required to support your major in LRM. The Environmental Studies Minor requires students to complete 20 credits in designated courses and 3 credits in an elective course. The objective in offering the 23 credit hour minor in Environmental Studies is to strengthen and deepen students’ knowledge and sensitivity regarding human impact on the environment, and the critical role this plays within the broad field of outdoor leisure and recreation. This intention also supports Barry’s mission, which asks us to care for one another and assume responsibility in environmental affairs. Teaching students about stewardship of the earth and its people by integrating subjects such as sustainability, social justice, and global issues within the curriculum meets this purpose. The minor in Environmental Studies will also broaden and enhance employment opportunities for students interested in combining training in leisure and recreation with environmentally-oriented careers. Students completing the minor should understand the impact of legal, social, economic, historical, political, scientific, and ethical decisions on environmental development and sustainability.
