Going Deep

On September 15 Barry students, faculty and staff took a dive, literally, as part of a reef clean-up effort on Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Leading the “Barry University Dive Team Underwater Cleanup” project was senior Katie Leiter, a Marine Biology major with a minor in Dive Education.

The reef clean-up was in conjunction with a class project, but it also gave Leiter and the other divers the chance to do their part for the environment. During the two-dive excursion aboard The American Dream II participants removed significant amounts of fishing line that had become embedded in the Barracuda Reef in Ft. Lauderdale. Leiter and her team collected donations from the School of Natural Health Sciences and from the athletics department to offset some of the costs associated with the dive.

Members of “Barry University Dive Team Underwater Cleanup” included: Front (L-R): Jacqueline Burbank, Maddison Connell, Stacy Bierswagen, Katherine Leiter and Eva Chios. Back (L-R): Brian Kelley, Dr. Ann Gibson, Keith Smith, Mark Wallerstein, Megan Arnold, Cari Hartman and John Caron.
