Love Potion No. 14

On Valentine’s Day weekend, February 13-15, the Department of Fine Arts joined forces with Barry’s new ensemble-in-residence, the South Beach Chamber Ensemble, to present Gaetano Donizetti’s “Elixir of Love” (L’Elisir D’Amore).

Among the most frequently performed of Donizetti’s operas, “Elixir” tells the story of Adina, a coquettish country belle, who is amusing herself by toying with her two sweethearts, Nemorino, a shy and simple young farmer, and Belcore, a recruiting sergeant from the next village. The two-act performance was stage directed by Dr. Beverly Coulter, professor of music, who also conducted the ensemble. The cast was comprised of voice major Bianca Chery (Giannetta), Elizabeth Doriety’06 (Adina), Jared Peroune (Nemorino), faculty member Hugo Marcos (Dulcamara), and guest artist Eddie Valdés (Belcore). The set - a quaint Italian village - was designed by Carlos Arditti. The chorus of villagers and soldiers was comprised mostly of students from the Department of Fine Arts’ performance workshop ensemble class.
